IHPME Student Profile
 Myla Moretti
In the last issue of SOG Connections, we introduced you to two students enrolled in IHPME’s Master of Health Informatics program. In this issue, you’ll get to know Myla Moretti, who is completing her PhD in health services research, focusing on health economics.
Prior to embarking on her doctoral studies, Myla had been engaged in training and research for over 10 years. Those experiences equipped her well for her current scholarly activities, which include the economic evaluation of interventions in maternal-child health as well as drug transport into breast milk, and evaluating the risks of exposures in pregnancy.
Professional Expertise
In addition to her studies at IHPME, Myla serves as the assistant director of the Motherisk Program at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. Motherisk is a source of evidence-based information on the safety or risk of drugs, chemicals, and disease during pregnancy and lactation. “Part of my role at Motherisk,” Myla explains, “includes training and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In that capacity, I offer guidance in study design, patient communication skills, and dissemination of research findings to both peer audiences and the medical community at-large.”
Myla also recently concluded a two-year term as president of the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS), a North American organization whose primary goal is to improve the health of mothers and their children through evidence-based knowledge and information dissemination activities and resources. At present, she remains a member of the OTIS board of directors.
Scholarly Leadership
An accomplished scholar, Myla has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals, and she has contributed chapters to several books. She is also a regular peer reviewer for a number of international journals, and has delivered over 50 presentations at national and international meetings. Throughout these endeavours, she has maintained her focus on maternal and child health.
When Myla receives her PhD, she will add that degree to her MSc in Clinical Pharmacology, and a BSc (Honours) in Pharmacology/Toxicology and Human Biology. Both of those degrees were from the University of Toronto.
IHPME Research Day
Learn more about the high-quality research IHPME students such as Myla are conducting at the Institute’s annual Research Day.
As we do every spring, on Wednesday, 2 May 2012, IHPME will showcase student research in poster presentations. In addition, there will be lectures by internationally recognized leaders in health-services research, as well as presentations of student and faculty awards.
We invite you to attend this stimulating event. |
