Making Connections
We were really pleased by the positive response we received to the piece we included in the Fall 2011 issue about two Master of Health Informatics students and their practica experiences. Your enthusiasm for these kinds of stories fits with the SOG’s strategic effort to intensify awareness of and connections among IHPME alumnus, students, and faculty members.
So, beginning with the next (Spring/Summer 2012) issue, we intend to feature one or more short stories illuminating the many ways that alumni, students, and faculty members come together on a professional level to foster excellence in health services research and practice. That might be through any number of ways; for example:
- An alumni who mentors a student, or who provides her with a practicum placement or job opportunity.
- A faculty member who inspires a student or takes on a dedicated tutor or preceptor role.
- A student who contributes his specialized knowledge or skills to a faculty member’s research project.
To make this plan work, of course, we need your input and ideas. Please send your suggestions directly to Tina Smith, the Director of the MHSc Health Administration Program.

Host an MHI practicum student
And still on the topic of connections, we invite you to consider hasting a Master of Health Informatics (MHI) student at your organization for a 16-week practicum (May-August 2012).
Graduate students in IHPME’s MHI program are available to assist in the successful design and deployment of your eHealth and health-informatics projects. By engaging an MHI student for the summer you will have access to special resources that integrate clinical practice and the ICT world.
Feedback from practicum preceptors has been immensely positive. Our talented, deeply knowledgeable MHI students have brought to the host organizations valuable skills, new ideas, and fresh insights.
