Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) 2003-2004

Under Dr. Coyte's leadership as President, the Canadian Health Economics Research Association (CHERA) formally transitioned into the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) in November 2003.

CAHSPR is instituted as a broadly based, interdisciplinary, and the intersectoral organization for linking academic researchers and health sedrvices and policy decision-makers. This new direction for CAHSPR directly complements the cross-cutting, multi-stakeholders approach emphasized by Dr. Coyte's CHSRF/CIHR Chair. The new Association has developed a partnership arrangement with the Canadian College of Health Executives to share an Executive Director and Administrative/Financial Infrastructure. This partnership will ensure closer alignment of both organizations.

The most important consequence of Dr. Coyte's role in developing CAHSPR has been the opportunity to expose trainees to the 'front-lines' of this cultural change as relationships shift and become more intersecting between academia and health service professionals. Mentorship and career placement is a priority for CAHSPR as it aims to populate academic and decision-maker sectors with health service research specialists who support evidence-based decision-making. Dr. Coyte's expertise in intergrative research and knowledge transfer mentorship, honed through the Chair experience, has enabled him to advise CAHSPR's mentorship, honed through the Chair experience, has enabled him to advise CAHSPR's mentorship arm and become the President of the Association. This Chair also established a unique internship for an interim CHERA/CAHSPR Executive Director during the Association's transition period.
