First Endowed Chair to Examine Health Management Strategies
On April 17th, 2001 Deans Naylor and Daniels of the Faculties of Medicine and Law were
joined by representatives of Liberty Health, friends and colleagues at a reception to
celebrate the naming of Dr. Peggy Leatt, Professor, Department of Health Administration as
the inaugural holder of Canadas first endowed chair in health management strategies.
The Liberty Health Chair in Health Management Strategies will study alternative
approaches to managing Canadas health care system. The goal is to determine how to
meet the ever-growing public demand for health care and health promotion services in a
financially sustainable, clinically effective manner. It will examine the potential
trade-offs offered by a variety of possible healthcare system changes, such as better
integration of health care delivery, patient conditions for accessing specific medical
services, and alternative sources of funding. It is hoped that this body of work will be
used to help determine the future of health care policy in Canada.
I am thrilled that the work produced by this chair will influence how we
determine what needs to be done to improve our healthcare system in Canada, says
Leatt. As the baby boom generation moves into old age, and the echo generation makes
it impact, we will be forced to reckon with new challenges, both from a delivery and
finance point of view. We need to ensure that the Canadian health care system is in a
position to deliver the best possible care to all of its users, especially focusing on
aspects of disease prevention.

The chair is located in both the faculties of medicine and law and will be based in the
Department of Health Administration in the first instance.
Professor Leatt is a marvelous choice as the inaugural holder of the chair,
says Gery Barry, President and CEO of Liberty Health. Her expertise and reputation
in the field of healthcare administration gives her a very unique qualification. There is
potential for long-tem impact on the study of how health care is delivered in this
country.
Peggy was Chair of the Department of Health Administration and the principal
investigator for the Hospital Management Research Unit from 1987 to 1998. In 1997, she was
awarded the Gary Filerman Prize by the Association of University Programs in Health
Administration, for outstanding leadership in health services administration. From 1998 to
2000 she was chief Executive Officer of the Health Services Restructuring Commission, and
is the founding editor of two leading academic health journals - Hospital Quarterly and
Healthcare Papers.
