Section 1. Getting Web Space

Why would I want to use UTORweb?
UTORweb supports individuals in their role at the University by providing:

  • Storage of files for later access, possibly from another computer. For example, you can save your work from a University computer for later access on a home computer or another University computer. Files placed in the private folder are not accessible by others.
  • To share or publish web pages, word processor documents, etc; anyone using a browser can access your work.

How does it work?
You get disk space on a special computer called a web server. You can save and retrieve your documents and files to this space from anywhere on the Internet. Files not in a private folder are accessible to others

(Files in the private folder are not accessible via this URL.) URLs cannot be changed. To enhance your security, we strongly recommend that webname not be your UTORid. How do I add my home page to the UTORweb directory?
There are two steps to complete so that a reference to your home page appears in the UTORweb directory.

1. Create a file called "myname"
Open a new page in a plain text editor such as Notepad or Simple Text.
On the first line, type your name as you would like it to be viewed in the directory. For example, if you want visitors to find you by last name, then type Lastname, Firstname (or Firstinitial) so it might look like: Lee, Terry or Lee, T.

Save the file as myname - do not add an extension like .doc or .txt.

2. Transfer "myname" to the UTORweb server
Using an FTP utility such as WS_FTP LE or Fetch, transfer the myname file to your private folder/directory on the UTORweb server. Your directory entry will appear the following day.

Your Web space should not contain the primary Web site for a political cause or politician. It's fine to have a link to an established political site, but it's not OK to be the site itself. Any content accessible to others must make clear that it represents your individual work and views, and is not officially approved by the University of Toronto.

Can I include image and sound files I found on other Web sites? Can I include magazine pictures that I have scanned?
Copyrighted works may not appear on Web pages unless the owner of the work has given you permission and you credit the source as requested by the owner. A single work can have multiple copyrights that must be respected—for example, the composer of a piece of music may hold a creation copyright, while someone else may hold a recording performance production copyight for their specific interpretation of the music.
