INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "IN THE WORLD OF NIKOLAI GOGOL'"
24-26 September 2009
University of Rome "Sapienza",
Rome Italy
The year 2009 marks the bicentenary since the birth of Nikolai Vasil'evich Gogol', the great Russian writer who was deeply tied to Italy and to Rome in particular. In the Eternal City he lived for a long time and wrote masterpieces like Dead Souls and The Overcoat. In honour of this bond the University of Rome "Sapienza" is organizing an international conference, "In the World of Nikolai Gogol'", which will take stock of the historical and critical progress scholarship made not only in Italy and Russia, but worldwide.
The conference is aimed at starting a reflection on the results and trends that have defined, over the past decades, the scholarship dedicated to Gogol'. It will involve as much the historical and critical aspects of scholarly research, as the religious and the philosophical, and will foster an analysis of the impact that his work has had on literature, on theatre and on television. Special attention will be devoted to new documentation and the latest critical acquisitions on the writer.
"In the World of Nikolai Gogol'" is organized by the Department of Philological, Linguistic and Literary Studies of the University of Rome "Sapienza" and is co-financed, among others, by the Foundation of the First President of Russia B. N. El'cin, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the cultural association "Nikolai Gogol' Award in Italy", and the University of Toronto.
Promoter of this event is professor Rita Giuliani, head of the Department of Russian Studies at the University of Rome. Professor Giuliani has been a scholar on Nikolai Gogol' for the past twenty years and can boast several key publications on the topic.
